Tropical Tryst: A Skinfood Coconut Mask Wash Off Review

We all know how much I loved the Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off back when I was in Korea. I mean, I enjoyed the original too (it has a lemony kind of scent, and the sugar is there), but the strawberry one just took it to the next level. The strawberry seeds! Ingenious!

So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled across the Skinfood Coconut Sugar Scrub a little while ago. I hadn’t (and still haven’t) heard anything really about this product, but based on my history with Skinfood I thought it was worth a shot.

First of all, the SMELL. OMG. So delicious. It smells like burnt brown sugar (in the best way) and I truly wanted to eat it. I restrained myself (just), but I was also really intrigued by the difference in texture between this and the original Black Sugar Mask Wash Off. While both that one and the Strawberry Sugar Mask have a more granular texture, and the sugar granules are more obvious, this one is more… blended? Almost like cake batter? (I swear I didn’t eat it).

So that was the first two things that got me. Next of all, the feeling of it on my skin was… perfect. We all know I have sensitive skin, so often I find myself erring away from exfoliation at my own peril, as sloughing off dead skin cells is one of the true keys to glowing skin. But when exfoliation hurts you or causes a reaction, it’s not something you feel like doing!

So I definitely put it off, unless I find the kind of product that meets me in the middle… like this one did.

While I have opened my mind to chemical exfoliants as of late (currently trying the Pixi Glow Tonic), I’m still a bit of a newbie and so physical ones are still probably preferable (when deemed absolutely necessary!). If Korean baths (jjimjilbangs) are anything to go by, scrubbing is the key to life, but I’m a bit of a delicate petal and as I mentioned, always try to put it off as long as possible. But the brightening effects after a good scrub are hard to deny — and this one is no exception!

In terms of packaging, it looks pretty much identical to the OG Black Sugar Scrub, just with a slightly different label. It does have the protective cap underneath the lid, seen here:

I also foolishly tried to take a picture of the product after having laid it down, and so it all rolled onto the one side. However, I decided to publish this because it actually gives you an idea of the texture as well. The thickness, and the fact that it’s not too granular — more of a paste, as I wrote above. It’s honestly one of my favourite things about this mask/scrub, and why I actually look forward to scrubbing my face with it.

If only you could smell this beauty!

Honestly, if you’re like me and you have ultra-sensitive skin, and perhaps an aversion to exfoliating because of this, it’s worth trying this mask out. The original and strawberry sugar scrubs really opened my eyes to the beauty of sugar as an exfoliant — and this one is no different.

But honestly, the uniqueness of this product is what got me. It’s a lovely, (delicious) smooth mask which actually works, and is also a pleasure to use. It’s a win-win for me!

If you’re interested in picking this baby up, it’s listed here on Amazon, but it looks unavailable for the time being. I actually had this post in draft for a while, and since then it doesn’t look easily available! Not ideal, so it may potentially be discontinued, methinks. Hopefully you can find a reputable source to cop it from, because it’s honestly a great product. But if they’ve decided to stick to their tried-and-true sugar masks, I can understand that. They’re iconic, after all!
