For any of you who aren’t in the loop of my life (and, obviously, you all want to be!), I used to work at a bookshop. For a number of years, I was lucky enough to swan around books and help people choose books and just generally bathe in the glory that is books. I love them, always have, always will (MB Bookclub, what up).
However… I have a deep secret to reveal: I haven’t finished one book this year!
You see, I am one of those readers who loves to start books, and especially loves to buy them, but if I’m not “feeling” them 100%… I put them down and walk away sloooowly. I’m not proud of this fact, but it sure is a fact.
I want to change this bad habit of mine, and so I’m making it public information and asking for your acceptance, not your scorn. I have a list of books (already purchased, of course) that I want to get through and review on here, and these are as follows:
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
This is my current read and one that I am thoroughly enjoying. I started watching The Mindy Project a little while ago, and after a false start, I got royally into it. She is smart and funny and I’m loving reading about her life before fame. A full review will be coming soon!
KL Noir: Yellow by Various Authors
I started this with a bang and I don’t know why I stopped! This is a Malaysian series (there are three more: Blue, White and Red) featuring dark, gritty, occasionally gruesome short stories set in Kuala Lumpur. Not usually my thing, but I am/was really enjoying it! I figured it would give me a good feel for the “real” Malaysia… although I don’t really know how I feel about that!
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
I know, I know, so typical, but I just have to read this inevitably sad book about the girl with the life-threatening illness and her first romance. That’s all I know, although I’ve seen snippets from that music video from the soundtrack (‘Boom Clap’ by Charli XCX) and I think it’s even sadder than I’m ready for. But I gotta do it!
Who doesn’t want to read Murakami? Seeing as I haven’t ever gotten around to reading John Orwell’s 1984, I thought I’d read this Japanese, sci-fi, dystopian take on it (at least that’s what I think it is). This book is also huge so it’s a massive commitment, but I’ve been reassured it’s worth it.
Everyone needs a little inspiration, and who better to glean that from than the incredibly talented, highly pedantic head honcho of Apple? I never was a huge tech fan (it’s not in my genes), but I do have respect for someone who built something from nothing – and something so awesome, at that.
I think that’s quite an ambitious little reading list I have here, but I really want to enjoy my books more, because what’s more enjoyable than reading? (That’s a rhetorical question, by the way.)
How about you? What are you reading at the moment? I’d love more inspiration of the literary kind!
Oh, and if you would like to read/listen to these books, why don’t you try Audible’s 30-day free trial
? They provide a huuuuge range of audio books to listen to, so you can read a book and eat a snack at the same time, without getting the pages dirty (not that I do that…). Click here to give it a go!
