Discovering Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur Old Railway Station

Recently I have had the pleasure of having two of my friends to stay with me (and Gav) in our new digs. It’s been great – is there anything better than hanging out with friends from all over the world in a random third country? I don’t think so (unless you count curry, lemon tart and sleeping in on a weekday… but for the sake of simplicity, let’s not). Because of my friends visiting, I have been playing Tour Guide (sort of) and getting off my butt and out and about more than I usually would. And so, I have a few little pictures to show you because of it. Care to see?

First up, is the KL Old Railway Station. I kept seeing this on the LRT on the way into “town” and thought it was so beautiful. It looks quite gothic and haunting, and it’s a real asset to the skyline. In fact, I’m really loving all of the Islamic architecture here in Kuala Lumpur. I actually really love living in an accepting Muslim country. There are so many different ethnicities and religions here, and it’s pretty amazing to see everyone living together in harmony. Plus, you get to try a million different types of food, which can only ever be a good thing.

Another interesting sight that I have now seen in Kuala Lumpur is Masjid Negara, which translates to the National Mosque. I have never actually been inside a mosque (until now), and I find them so interesting and beautiful and slightly mystifying. Here in KL, we regularly hear the Azan (prayer) echoing throughout the city. It’s hauntingly beautiful. To be inside a place of prayer which is so different to the churches I (used to) know is a very interesting experience. This one is quite a modern mosque, and I’m keen to see some more traditional ones. Also, as an aside, I actually really enjoyed wearing the headscarf!

Lastly (for now) is the Petronas Towers. These are two glowing structures that light up the KL skyline, and they’re really quite beautiful. That’s what oil money gets you! In all seriousness, the way they have integrated the geometric shapes and softness of Islamic aesthetic into the building is really captivating and goes to show what thoughtful and creative architecture can do. They’re just really pretty!

As you can probably tell, I am absolutely loving KL, and so did our friends. It seems to be a slightly underestimated city and not very well known to a lot of people. I am here to change that! The food, the architecture, the people… it’s all amazing. Trust me,

Have you ever been to KL or Malaysia? What were your thoughts? Were/are you as obsessed as I am? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time,

Steph x
