My New Local Favourite: A Review of Marmalade Cafe, Brighton East.

I’m back! Yes, after a two-month long sabbatical (has it really been two months?) I have come to my senses and am back to my old blogging ways. I have missed you all, dear readers. But don’t be fooled, dear reader – during this whole time, not once did I cease visiting cafes nor indulging in fine cuisine, all in the name of pure science. Oh yes, I have found some beauties in this time, and am going to tell you all about them.

My first gem is Marmalade Cafe, in Brighton East. Tucked away on Hawthorn Road, just opposite Dick Smith, this little darling is a real find. My dad sneakily found it one day. We’re still not sure when he was going for coffee without my mum and I, but I’m glad he did. Marmalade Cafe is a beautiful, light-filled spot perfect for breakfast, lunch, or (even better) brunch. I loved it straightaway, and I’m sure you will too. This lovely, light-filled spot is so cosy and cute, with fresh gerberas on every table and array of tasty-looking homemade treats.

The first time I went to Marmalade, I stuck to my trusty favourite and ordered the Bircher muesli and a mochachino. Yum yum yum! Their coffee is lovely, and prompt. The muesli was delicious – soaked in juice, served with poached seasonal fruits (pears and berries this time) and topped with yoghurt. All for $8.90! Have a look:

Their breakfast menu is wide-ranging and caters for everyone. Three pages of deliciousness! From porridge or fruit toast to the big breakfasts with all the trimmings, you will find the perfect brekkie here. Mum enjoys her usual: eggs florentine with a side of mushrooms and chipolata sausages. My dad also likes the eggs on toast or the porridge. Here’s a little preview of the eggs florentine with the sausages:

Yummy! Recently when we visited Marmalade Cafe, I was in the mood for something a little more indulgent than muesli (although I do still love my muesli). I decided on the cinnamon-dusted French toast, made with challah bread and topped with berries, banana and maple syrup. And my goodness, it was amazing. The bread was dense and sweet, the combination of the berries and bananas worked perfectly and the maple syrup was the icing on the cake (or the syrup on the french toast, as it were). Incredible. One of my best breakfasts this year. See for yourself:

Delicious, no? These photos are from my phone and don’t even do the meals justice. The French toast was so sweet, and was drowning (in a very good way) in maple syrup, mixed with the juice from the berries. Mmm. Perfecto!

Marmalade is my new local favourite. Our favourite staff at Cafe Choo Choo (previously reviewed on Misc Bliss) are sadly leaving, and I jus know that it will no longer be the same. Choo Choo was our local for well over a year, and it will be sorely missed. But at the same time, I know that Marmalade Cafe will be the perfect new haunt. We have already been so many times in the past few weeks, some of the staff already know us. All of the staff at Marmalade Cafe are so friendly, and there is always someone to greet you, no matter how busy they are. Tucked away in Brighton East, it is often busy but not at all pretentious.

I recently gushed about Marmalade to a work colleague, who has since informed me that she and her husband loved it, particularly their mince pieces (fresh, deep and full of fruit). These mince pieces are next on my list to try, as is one of their yummy-looking Turkish melts for lunch. I highly recommend Marmalade Cafe for breakfast, lunch and everything in between.
